EASTHAMPTON-Peter Carey Crooker passed away into eternity on September 30, 2016 from appendix/colon cancer after a long fight. I (Peter) am writing this obituary as I was figuring the consequences of this stage 4 terminal disease. I am writing this obituary to get out a bigger message. One out of twenty people will develop colon cancer in his/her lifetime. At the present time, doctors encourage everyone to have a colonoscopy every 10 years after age 50, but I disagree. I heeded their advice at age 50 and was clear. Cancer is not in my family, I am not a smoker, and I have never been a heavy drinker, however, at 59 I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. My cancer started in the appendix and had time to travel to the colon where the walls are very thin. The cancer broke through the colon walls and into the stomach, thus, stage 4 terminal cancer. My message is to get a colonoscopy every 5 years after age 50. If I had done that, I might not be writing my own obituary now. If my message saves one life, I have accomplished something special. My friends and my wife’s side of the family know I have died and I will miss you all – especially Dawna Bartnicki and Rhiannon Bartnicki-Nihill. I feel badly that I have left you all at a fairly young age. I am truly sorry I cannot finish our old age days together with my wife, Dawna. Hopefully, I will see you all in eternity - all you have to do is believe. God bless you all, Pete.
Service will be at the Methodist Church at 222 College Highway Southwick, Ma on Thursday October 6th at 4:00PM. Anyone can attend, even those who are not family or friends but have battled cancer and know what I am talking about.
