George W. Tower 88, a resident of Southwick, MA died peacefully at home on March 22, 2023, with his wife by his side.
He was born in Springfield, MA to Theron and Mary (Sheehan) Tower and grew up in Hungry Hill. As a young man, he liked cars and was a member of the Strokers Hot Rod Club. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his dad and friends. On July 4th,1955 he met his life’s companion, Shirley Randall, at a dawn dance at Mountain Park. They married the following year and moved to Southwick where they were blessed with four children. George, with no formal training, but an aptitude for machines, worked in many local machine shops until opening his own shop, Space Age Associates. He worked with many larger companies designing and crafting a variety of machine parts including some used for the space shuttle. He was especially proud of the skilled machinists that he assembled to work with him. He enjoyed traveling to sulky races and warm weather destinations and watching his eight grandchildren grow to be special people in their own right. He always had a special smile for his nine great-grandchildren.
He is survived by Shirley, his wife of 68 years, his children: Ruthann Patenaude (Dave), William Tower, Suzanne Hansen (Peter) & Dianne Button (Norm), 8 grandchildren: Corey Tower, Matthew Tower, Ben Murray, Thom Hansen, Jen Brent, Emily Hansen, Rob Hansen & Ashley Button, 9 great grandchildren: Connor, Coleman, Nixon, Kallie, Porter, Gavin, Jackson, Piper and Jordyn, as well as many nieces & nephews & his loyal friend Jim.
George is predeceased by his sisters Rosemary Maloney (Dick), Ellen Whalen (Jack) & Ann Ahern (Ed).
Special thanks to the many nurses and home health aides who helped care for George enabling him to live his remaining days at home.
A graveside service will be held at the family’s convenience.
