David P. Schmidt

SOUTHWICK-David P. Schmidt, 61, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2019, at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield, MA.

David was born on March 27, 1958, in Springfield, MA to Gordon J. and Patricia J. (McMullin) Schmidt. David attended Southwick Schools graduating from Southwick High School Class of 1976. He earned his Class C certification from the Department of Transportation and was a certified Boom Truck Operator. David had worked J.R. Kakley & Sons in Springfield, MA for over 25 years and was an integral piece of their daily operations.

You would often see David dressed in his favorite attire, a tye-dye bandanna over his long hair, and shirt in honor of one of his favorite bands, the Grateful Dead. He could brighten any room with his array of colors and warm smile.

An avid sports fan, David played basketball in High School and continued his love of the game for many years after playing in various leagues in the community. He also loved football, and through thick and thin he supported his beloved Miami Dolphins his entire life. He took any opportunity he could to talk sports and passed his passion along to his only son, and best friend, Tim.

David’s family fondly remembers him as a loving son, amazing father, great brother, and friend to all. He was a hard worker, extremely dependable, and the most caring and giving person you could know. In his spare time, he enjoyed being active outside, soaking up the sun, and growing vegetables in his garden along with many of his favorite flowers. David was an awesome cook, he could prepare nearly anything. His garden bounty was often used to create some of his favorite dishes; cooked beets and green beans among others. He would also spend time putting together an amazing fruit cup, all of which his family will miss.

David is predeceased by his father Gordon J. Schmidt of Southwick, MA. He leaves his only son Timothy D. Schmidt of Somers, CT, his mother Patricia J. Schmidt of Southwick, MA, the mother of his son Kim Hebert, his brother Eric Schmidt and partner Joan of Charlestown, RI, two beloved aunts Marion Hess and Alice McMullin, his best friends Jeffery Nistch and Richie Reed, and his precious cat.

To honor David’s wishes, he will be cremated. A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 15, 2019, at Southwick Cemetery, Southwick, MA.
