MONTAGUE-Mrs. Joseph Markol (Amelia “Millie” Lucas) died peacefully surrounded by family on January 21, 2017 at age 87.
Mille was born in Greenfield, MA the daughter of Albin and Amelia (Giknis) Lucas, both of Lithuania. She grew up a first-generation American on Canada Hill and attended Greenfield High School. When she wasn’t attending classes, she spent most of her time on her sister’s farm helping to care for her sister’s children.
Though Millie held various jobs over the years, she was first and foremost a selfless, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Taking care of her family was her joy and passion.
Millie was a fabulous cook, and it was important to her that the family share a delicious, nutritious meal at the close of every day. She spent hours with her daughters and grandchildren preparing traditional Polish and Lithuanian dishes for special family gatherings at Easter and Christmas Eve. Her baking abilities were unmatched, especially her pies!
Millie was also an accomplished seamstress and took great pride in sewing her children’s clothing. But, her sewing talents were not limited to making clothes. Her skills ranged from upholstering furniture to making beautiful stuffed dolls and toys for her granddaughters. Millie was also an avid gardener and canned or froze her harvest.
Millie and Joe’s romance was an inspiration to all who knew them, a true story of love and commitment. In the early years of their marriage, they went polka dancing at St. Kaziemirz every weekend. As years passed, their mutual interest changed to watching the songbirds, turkeys, deer, and other wildlife attracted to their backyard.
Millie was a lifelong communicant at Our Lady of Peace Church (St. Mary’s) in Turners Falls, where she and her husband Joe were married in 1947. Millie is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Linda and Thomas Lynch of Belchertown, Donna and James Klaiber of Montague, Patricia and Drake Williams of Leyden, and Veronica and Pierce Williams of Blue Ridge, TX. She is also survived by her 6 grandchildren and their spouses, and nine great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her beloved son, Peter, of Montague. She was the last surviving member of her family: Joseph Lucas, Helen (Lucas) Kuzmeskus, Alfred Lucas, John Lucas, and Ernest Lucas. In lieu of flowers, Millie has requested that donations be made in her name to Dakin Humane Society, PO Box 6307, Springfield, MA, 01101 or to Hospice of Franklin County, 329 Conway Street, Greenfield, MA 01301.
A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Peace Church, in Turners Falls, on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 11am.
